Looking Like a Job Site

The second week has been full of progress thus far.  Beginning early Monday morning, we started to layout the corners of the house which really gave the project a sense of life seeing how it would really be on the site.  We have also got the necessities on the site including the trailer (Davison Trucking) and temporary power pole.

With another early start Wednesday morning, we set out the location of all 26 piers for the foundation of the home by running series of strings to set out the cross points as to where the piers would be placed.  We are looking forward to drilling the holes toward the end of this week and staying on track with the schedule.  Everything is looking great and we hope to keep the positive momentum going!

First Week on the Site

We had our first week of site work this past week. We had to work hard to lay out the four corners of the house in order to begin to work towards setting the foundation. Our first step was to clear the back part of the site. We had to clear about 20 feet of brush and trees from the back part of the site.

Our next step was laying the initial four corners of the house. Thanks to Sam's dad we were able to lay these out in a single day and accurately. We got a unique opportunity to learn a little about surveying and have a little fun in the process.

After laying these out we began to look at the floor heights for the subfloor of the house which by code has to be 18" off the dirt. We found out that if we did that we would be looking at about a 4.5 - 5 foot gap at the low end of the site between the dirt and the sub floor. We had a dozier come out to level the site. With the site leveled we will be able to lay out the four corners again and begin to set up for the footings.

Ground Breaking/Gala Event

Yesterday was a huge step forward for the habiTECH2013 team, as well as the Albritton Family. Needless to say, we were all very busy getting things set up.
First, we held our ground breaking ceremony, which was a huge success. We are all very thankful for everyone's support. This just brings us one step closer to completing our main goal.
Later that evening, we hosted our gala event to not only fund raise, but to inform our guests all about our project and what we are doing. Again, another huge success. We as a team would like to wish our deepest thanks to everyone who helped make our gala such a great success. Now as we all prepare for the physical labor within the near future, I think it's safe to say, we are all excited to finally get out of studio and get some fresh air!!!!!

Construction Documents/"Snow Day"

Due to the inclement weather, school was cancelled yesterday. While most students enjoyed the "snow day" keeping warm, the habiTECH2013 team kept busy inside Hale Hall finishing our construction documents. Now as we wait for our building permit, we are all getting ready for our ground breaking ceremony on Saturday morning, as well as our Gala, which is scheduled later that evening. We are all looking forward to informing people about our project and fundraising money for this great cause.

Working hard on the Weekend!

Today, the HabiTECH Studio decided to meet from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm to spend some extra time working on Construction Documents.  Groups have been meeting with our instructor all day to make corrections and improvements to our plans.

We have also been working hard on preparing for our Gala next Saturday night!
The Gala is January 19th at 6:00 pm in the Norton Building of downtown Ruston.
We have started collecting our items for the silent auction and are thrilled
with the amount of items we will have for everyone to bid on!
Here is just one of many items we have for the auction!

Kitchen Set Gift Basket donated by Penny Perfect of Ruston

We hope to see everyone next Saturday for our Groundbreaking Ceremony on site (1427 Oakdale Street, Ruston, La) at 2:00 pm and then join us for a delicious dinner and silent auction at our Gala at 6:00 pm!

Construction Docs and Gala!

This week the habiTECH Studio has been hard at work on the Construction Documents to submit to the city for approval next week. We have been working in groups to finish the plans, sections, elevations, details, and landscape.  We have also been planning and making arrangements for our big fundraiser next Saturday, the habiTECH 2013 Gala.  The Gala includes a dinner that will be provided by local restaurant Ponchatoulas.  The event will also have a silent auction that will have a variety of items from sports to art, to candles and jewelry.  Multiple businesses in Ruston such as Rodeo, The Fashion, Lewis Boutique, Baldwin's Jewelers, and Penny Perfect have donated items for the auction and have been a huge support for our Gala!  We also have another huge event for the habiTECH House next Saturday before the Gala - the Groundbreaking Ceremony.  We hope to see everyone on our site for this exciting event at 2:00 pm next Saturday, January 19, to officially begin the construction phase of this wonderful project!
